On returning from Germany we had just one more night in Holland.
We were invited by Leny, who we met a week ago, to stay in
her home in Purmerend.
Leny and Loes as we set off into the centre
of Purmerend to find some supper after our drive back from Germany.

Purmerend is another new town,
this time north of Amsterdam.
It grew up around an old market town
of the region.
We followed the signs to the centre . . .
signs this time inlaid into the footpath
rather than hoisted high on finger posts.
Leny had an idea of where to eat but she didn't let
on at this stage.
So . . . lets walk to the Centrum.

The central square was based around an old cattle
market.
Even now new buildings are being erected, as
can be seen by the cranes in the back streets.

To celebrate the town's history
there was a fine sculpture of farm animals
in remembrance of the old cattle market.
The square is now a town centre cafe quarter
and is surrounded on all sides by restaurants and
eating houses.
To keep the record straight
I didn't ask the ladies to sit on the statues,
but by the look of the polished heads, it would seem
to be
a local tradition for a photo-opportunity anyway.

We walked around the square, only to return
to the first restaurant we passed, as this turned out to be
Leny's favourite.

It was a modern conversion
of one of the older market buildings.
Inside were some of the stalls, the brick floors
and the old beams
of a cattle shed that was once part of the market
infrastructure.
Nowadays it is a really nice restaurant.
where we were served by the young staff
and enjoyed a great meal.

By the time we were walking back to the car
park near the station, twilight had set in
and the station bike park and street lights
were lighting our way back.
All that remained now was to find Leny's house
and have a good night's sleep.

Next morning it was time to say our goodbyes
. . . to Leny and to Holland.
The motorway south . . . with its "sound
screens" built to each side when passing through built
up areas.
It was taking us ever closer to Hook of Holland.
On the way here we had landed in Rotterdam Europort.
On our departure we set off from Hook of Holland,
just the other side of the same river.
Rotterdam is built around one of the many deltas
of the River Rhine as it reaches the North Sea.
A daytime crossing this time and we managed
to get a front seat view for the whole trip.
That included getting reasonably up close and
personal to the many boats that were travelling up and down
the North sea / English channel.
As the day was drawing to a close we were greeted
with a fine sunset over Harwich and the English coast.
Once clear of the harbour it was a short drive
to my daughter's house where another nice evening meal was waiting.
Welcome Home.
